The not so basic apple

Fall in the Northeast is prime time for picking and eating one of nature’s most amazing fruits – the apple.

Even if you live elsewhere, the apple is always the most prevalent and diverse fruit in our supermarkets.

There are hundreds of varieties of apples, like Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and Cortland in between. Apples are packed with nutritional goodness, and so mom was right when she told us, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” It’s a medical fact!

Apples can be enjoyed in many different ways. By themselves, they are a delicious and portable snack. They can also be sliced into salads, munched with cheese, dipped into natural peanut butter, baked into pies, mixed into soups or curries, crushed into sauce or cider, mixed into sausage, or paired with meat (typically pork).

Do you love apples, how do you eat them?

Lately, I’ve been spicing mine up and layering in my overnight oats or blended in my smoothie bowls.
